Kate Daniels # 7 (Magic Breaks) and The Chicagoland Vampires #10 (Blood Games) are to be released the SAME DAY.

The Chicagoland Vampires, Chloe Neill (Part 1/3)

I should have posted it a week ago, but I had exams.

I was a grad student until Chicago vampires announced their existence to the world, and a rogue vampire attacked me, scared by the master of Cadogan House. To save me, Ethan Sullivan converted me. The Lord of the Hyde Park manor is tall, green-eyed, full of four centuries worth of charm. Suddenly I am handy with serious weaponry, and pursued by an unknown enemy.

I'll only post the first summary, since I try to avoid spoilers.

I remember when I picked up this series for the first time. I had seen it in my local bookstore a few times, and I though "oh no, another vampire series". *Insert facepalm here* But stupidity had an end : I went to a cruise to Greece with my parents and I bought the first two to have something to read.
I didn't regret it. Well, I did, in fact regret having read the first two in less than a day. I was soooo bored for the rest of the cruise, I re-read them quite a number of times and found things I missed at the other reads.
My first experience with Merit and her crew was memorable and awesome.

So, characters.
Merit is... The Jennifer Lawrence of vampires. You want to hug her and tell her "Be my best friend forever !"
She's smart, she's kind, she's witty and Sarcasm could be her second name.

Ethan is yummy. He can be an assh*le, but he's yummy. And the more you go in the book, the cuter he gets.

Joshua Merit (Merit's father, noobs.). Well, I'll let Olaf say it for me. (And I don't like him.)

So, to the acceptance part. Ethan saves Merit's life, but becoming a vamp was very, very far from what she would have wanted to be.
She resents him for a while, but accepts her old life is over. She discovers that she can be something else and she rocks.

I don't know what I can say to add to that... I know I am in no way praising the series like it should be, but I don't want to spoil anyone, so the best vould be to try the series. The first book just came out in paperback, if anyone wants to give it a shot.
Just know that the ChiVamps series is my #2, of all the books and series that I read. (If that tells you something)

So, the next book reviews will be of another series of my top 3.
We will talk about Chloe Neill's awesome series The Chicagoland Vampires.

The only thing is, I am a lazy, lazy girl and there is 9 novels out so far.
But I am an English student, and I learned to outline things (like commentaries and essays), so here's what I'm going to do :
- A post for books 1, 2 and 3 (Some Girls Bite, Friday Night Bites and Twice Bitten, for those who don't know the series)
-Another for books 4, 5, 6 and 7 (Hard Bitten, Drink Deep, Biting Cold and House Rules)
-And a last one for books 8 and 9 (Biting Bad and Wild Things)

I tried to find an underlying theme common to the books I grouped together, from problem to resolution.See you later with the first post ! 

Hey les gens ! Les prochaines reviews seront à propos d'une autre série de mon top 3 : Les Vampires de Chicago, de Chloe Neill.

Je suis une grosse, grosse feignasse et 9 tomes ont déjà été publié (je parle en VO).
MAIS je suis étudiante en anglais, et tous les étudiants apprennent à faire des plans pour des trucs chiants (type commentaires et dissertations). Voilà ce que je vais faire :
-Un post pour les tomes 1, 2 et 3 (Certaines mettent les dents, Petites morsures entre amis et Mordre n'est pas jouer)
-Un post pour les 4, 5, 6 et 7 (Mordre vous va si bien, Morsures en eaux troubles, Morsure de sang froid et Permis de mordre)
-Et un dernier pour les 8 et 9 (On ne mord que deux fois, et Wild Things, pas encore traduit)

J'ai essayé de trouver un fil rouge pour regrouper les livres ensembles dans ces parties. On verra donc le pourquoi et la résolution.

Reign

I talked about this series a little sooner. I really like it, even if it's historically incorrect. Here's the summary : 

"Set in 1557 France, the highly fictionalized series follows the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, at French court while she awaits her marriage to the future Francis II of France, whom she has been engaged to since they were six. At court, Mary has to contend with the changing politics and power plays, as well as her burgeoning feelings for Francis and the romantic attentions from Francis' bastard half-brother, Bash. Francis' mother, Catherine de' Medici, is secretly trying to prevent the marriage following Nostradamus's confidential prediction that the marriage will lead to Francis' death. The series also follows the affairs of Mary's Scottish handmaidens Kenna, Aylee, Lola and Greer, who are searching for husbands of their own at court."

I like it. The characters are great (I love Mary and Francis. And Catherine, even if she's not one of the "good" guys), the plot is interesting and the actors make it seem true. Plus, they have an amazing soundtrack and beautiful costumes. And yes, I'm rooting for Frary (Francis and Mary).


Reign. J'ai parlé de cette série un peu plus tôt. J'aime vraiment bien, même si c'est historiquement incorrect. Résumé :

"Marie Stuart arrive à 15 ans à la cour de France du roi Henri II. Elle est fiancée avec le Prince François.
Son avenir ne s’annonce pas comme elle l’attendait. Son mariage est incertain, l’alliance avec la France est fragile, et de nombreux dangers la menacent : intrigue, tentative de meurtre, de viol et la guerre avec l’Angleterre…
Elle est accompagnée de ses suivantes : Kenna, Greer, Aylee et Lola."

C'est plutôt bon. Les personnages sont attachants (j'adore Mary et François. Et Catherine, même si c'est une "méchante"), l'histoire est intéressante, et les acteurs assez impliqués pour que l'histoire semble plausible. En plus, ils ont une bande son superbe et des costumes magnifiques. Et oui, je suis une fan de Frary (le couple formé par Mary et François).

This was me after reading Rises. I'm still emotionally fragile about it : I can read passages (like, the last third), but not the whole book.

Let me explain : the first person narrative make us connect with the characters. It's understandable : if we didn't want to get to know them, we wouldn't read the books.
Here, it's so awesomely made, we can feel what Kate feels. And this book, my friends, is not a happy one for her. She's... Mistreated, to be kind, by everyone. She's exhausted, she's alone, she's scared, basically, she hurts. And I was hurt with her, was confused with her, cried for her at some points.

Curran... He made me throw the book. Really. What an ass. I understand why he did what he did, but sh*t. I wish Kate would have head-butted him. I sure wanted to. I won't go further, because I might swear and be rude.

The end... Is perfect. It healed my heart. We lose a character I love, but I think she died the way she would have wanted to. The very end had me giggling hysterically and crying a little. I'll let you discover why.

Pas de résumé, et pas de citations, mais voici mon avis de toutes façons !

Voilà, ça c'est moi après la lecture de Rises. Je suis toujours émotionnellement fragile avec ce livre ; je peux lire des passages (genre, le dernier tiers), mais pas la livre en entier.

Je vais essayer d'expliquer : il est écrit à la première personne, pour nous aider à nous identifier aux personnages. C'est logique : si on n'aime ou ne comprend pas les personnages, il n'y a aucune chance pour qu'on accroche à une série.
Dans Rises, c'est tellement bien fait qu'on ressent tout comme Kate le ressent. Et je vous assure que ce bouquin n'est pas un bouquin joyeux. Kate en prend plein la gueule, de la part de tout le monde. Elle est fatiguée, elle est seule, elle a peur, elle a mal (mentalement et physiquement). Et ça, je l'ai ressenti aussi : j'avais mal avec elle, j'étais aussi confuse qu'elle l'était, et j'ai même pleuré pour elle à certains passages.

(C'en est trop !)

 

Curran... Il m'a fait balancer le livre. Pour de vrai. Quel connard. Je comprend pourquoi il a fait ce qu'il a fait, mais m*rde. J'aurai voulu que Kate lui mette un coup de boule. J'en avais envie, moi. Je ne vais pas en dire plus, parce que je pourrais devenir vulgaire.

 

 

La fin... Est parfaite. Elle m'a aidée à surmonter le reste du livre. On perd un personnage que j'adore, mais je pense qu'elle s'en va de la façon qu'elle aurait voulue.

La toute fin m'a fait rire comme une petite fille, et verser une petite larme. Je vous laisse découvrir pourquoi.

Magic Slays, Ilona Andrews

"Kate Daniels has quit the Order of Merciful Aid, but starting her own business isn't easy when the Order starts disparaging her good name. And being the mate of the Beast Lord doesn't bring in the customers, either. So when Atlanta's premier Master of the Dead asks for help with a vampire, Kate jumps at the chance. Unfortunately, this is one case where Kate should have looked before she leapt."


Magic Bleeds was the last book published by Milady in France, and it makes Magic Slays a little special.

The plot revolves around a problem Kate stumbles on when she is hired to find a man that was abducted. She finds wards that sudently disappeared when they shouldn’t have, and is caught in a thread that will lead her to mass murder.

Anyway, Slays was kind of awesome, but felt a little like a fill-in book : no family problems for Kate, no threat from Daddy dear.
We learn more about her magic and how Kate can use and control it (it seemed to me it was one of the purposes of this book), and it’s kind of awesome.

I like Kate’s friendship with Andrea, it brings a little lightness to her life. Derek is great, too, and it’s good to see Kate has people she can trust that much, especially since she was so alone at the beginning of the series.

Curran... Well, he’s a cute pie. His dinner home, alone with Kate near the end of the book gave me the chills. I love how he loves her, and how she loves him. The two of them together make me very, very happy.

"Kate Daniels peut avoir quitté l'Ordre, mais elle est encore jusqu'aux genoux dans les problèmes paranormaux. Ou elle le serait si elle pouvait trouver quelqu'un pour l'embaucher. Ouvrir sa propre entreprise est plus difficile qu'elle ne le pensait, maintenant que l'Ordre a ruiné sa réputation, et de nombreux clients potentiels ont peur d'avoir des problèmes avec le Seigneur des Bêtes, qui se trouve être le compagnon de Kate.

Blessure Magique était le dernier tome de Kate Daniels publié par Milady, et ça rend Magic Slays spécial.

L’intrigue est simple : Kate tombe sur des gardes qui disparaissent sans raisons alors qu’elle cherche à trouver un homme qui a été enlevé, et elle est prise dans une enquête qui la mène à une tuerie de masse.

Slays était un super livre, mais il m’a semblé être un tome de «remplissage» : on n’apprend rien de plus sur la famille de Kate ou ses intentions envers elle.
Cependant, on y développe nos connaissances sur ses pouvoirs et sur sa magie, et le contrôle qu’elle exerce dessus (j’ai un l’impression que c’était ce à quoi ce livre servait), et c’est plutôt bien mené.

La relation de Kate avec ses amis, Andrea et Derek est super : elle amène un peu de légèreté à sa vie. C’est génial de voir qu’elle a des gens auxquels elle peut faire confiance, surtout vu qu’elle était si seule au début de la série.

Curran... C’est un muffin au chocolat. Le dîner qu’ils partagent vers la fin du livre m’a donné des frissons. J’aime voir à quel point il l’aime, et à quel point elle l’aime. Ensemble, ils me rendent vraiment, vraiment heureuse.


Pas de citations, ça me ferait mal de déformer l’original avec mes traductions bancales... Désolée !

Hey ! I know I've been a little scarce the last two weeks, and I don't really have an excuse. I was on vacations, and then I discovered a new series (I might make a post about it later), so I didn't really think about the blog.
